Program Description
The Alternative to Out of School Suspension (ATOSS) Program is a provisional course of study for secondary students who have been suspended from their comprehensive school campus. ATOSS students receive interim educational services in a safe, structured environment while receiving full credit for school attendance. Student participation in the ATOSS program is voluntary. Transportation to and from ATOSS sites is not provided by the District.
Students who have been suspended from school often fall behind academically. These students receive no credit for work covered during the time that they are serving out-of-school suspension days. ATOSS is an amnesty program allowing students to maintain their academic momentum and receive full credit for their work. For this reason, students are encouraged to bring assignments from their comprehensive schools. If students do not bring their own assignments, their curriculum consists of FCAT preparation or other appropriate materials provided by the Dropout Prevention/Alternative Education Department.
In addition to reinforcing traditional academic concepts, ATOSS offers career/character education and provides social/emotional skill building. The success of the ATOSS program depends upon the collective skills and professionalism of the personnel at every ATOSS site. Each member of the staff is an integral part of a team. Working collaboratively, staff ensures that ATOSS students receive the highest quality education possible during their time in the program.
