Asbestos Management
Asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM) utilized in some of the district schools are inspected semi-annually to ensure they are in good condition. When the building materials become damaged, there is the potential for a release of asbestos fibers into the atmosphere which can cause a risk to health. Frequent inspections of the ACBM will identify those materials that have the potential for damage. Removal of the materials prone to damage is called abatement. ACBM are abated if they become damaged or prior to renovation or demolition of a building.
The District’s goal is to maintain our facilities in good condition in order to minimize exposure to students and staff from hazardous materials. Every school or facility in the School District of Palm Beach County has an Asbestos Management Plan that lists all materials identified as containing asbestos. These plans are available for review at any time and are utilized by the district’s maintenance staff to verify whether or not a building material contains asbestos prior to performing any maintenance activity.
