Energy Use and Conservation
How much energy has the District used over the last five years?
Click on the graph (R) to see a five-year comparison of the number of kilowatt-hours used per month throughout the District. This data covers the period from July 2007 to March 2012.
How does the District control energy use and associated costs?
One of the main ways energy use is managed is through building automation, also known as a computerized energy management system (EMS). EMS is a computer-based system used to control and maintain temperature, comfort, lights and equipment monitoring throughout the District. With the help of sensors, the District's two EMS operators (Frank Arancibia and Marcelino Rodriguez) are able to see and operate, in real time, the HVAC equipment, parking and interior lighting. The system itself is capable of keeping a pre set point or schedule using the information loaded into the system.
We currently program most schools' air conditioning systems and exterior lights to automatically turn off in the evenings and on weekends, unless there is a need to have them on during "off peak" hours. If your school requires these services after hours, please be sure to follow the Guidelines for Submitting HVAC Schedules.
What can schools do to save energy?
Efficient energy use and energy conservation is EVERYONE'S responsibility. As occupants of District facilities, we are expected to do what we can to make sure that energy resources are used wisely. That means turning off the lights, shutting down computers (CPUs and monitors!), projectors, and other equipment when they are not in use, and using natural daylight whenever feasible.
