Curriculum & Instructional Materials
The majority of students identified as ESE should be accessing the general education curriculum, Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS).
The School District of Palm Beach County Instructional Materials Department every adoption year provides access of general education materials for ESE teachers either through Learning Village or modified sets. Materials are purchased and allocated to school sites during the adoption year for implementation the following year. Each year a different subject area is adopted. The state cycle for subject area adoption is every six years.
Teachers instructing students in General Education Classrooms or Content Equivalent Classes should follow the NGSSS and utilize the appropriate General Education Materials while providing accommodations according to the student’s Individualized Education Plan. In addition, teachers who have received training in Content Enhancement Strategies and Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) may wish to utilize these strategies to allow for student access to the general curriculum.
Access to the NGSSS can also be provided through Assistive Technology (AT). AT can be any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a student with a disability. These include low to high tech tools. Many of these tools can be located in the in the Low Tech Tools for Inclusive Education Kit (LoTTIE Kit) provided to every school. Consider the following guidelines when determining access needs: low to high tech, less complicated to more complicated, techniques verses tools, and more inclusive less isolation. For more information about AT access call PX 48551.
Instructional materials are also provided every adoption year to teachers instructing ESE students working on the alternate standards, Access Points. These materials are available to specific sites based on the student needs. Materials vary at sites. For questions regarding instructional materials contact your school’s ESE Contact or Instructional Materials Manager.
