The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires that each school show that all students are making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). AYP measures public schools’ and districts’ progress in enabling all students to meet the state’s academic achievement standards. AYP measurements target the performance and participation rates of different subgroups based on race or ethnicity, socio-economic status, disability, and English language proficiency. The goal of NCLB is to have 100% of students perform at a proficient level by the school year 2013-2014. In short, AYP looks at how a school progresses towards meeting that 100% proficiency goal. AYP is not the same as the school grade. An “A” or “B” school may not meet AYP requirements.
