The application for substitute teaching is closed.

If you have applied to the substitute teacher job advertisement and meet the qualifications as outlined below, it is your responsibility to submit the requested documents before you will be processed for the substitute teacher position.

After applying online, review the required hiring documentation below and submit all documents together to the Substitute Office.

*Submitting the application and forms required to become a substitute teacher does not guarantee employment. Hiring decisions will be made by the Department of Recruitment & Retention based on basic employment conditions, work history, and educational background.

    • A Substitute is a temporary employee who works on an as-needed basis.
    • A Substitute is paid for hours worked and does not receive any benefits.
 

Application Process:

Please read and follow ALL instructions below.  The following steps are to be completed in the order they are listed.

  1. Apply to the Substitute Teacher Job Posting when available. Please make a note of your Applicant ID number.                                                                                        .                              
  2. Register and attend the How to be a Better Substitute Workshop if needed. Please see below for additional details and to determine if this requirement applies to you and your application.                                                      

    Substitute teacher applicants are required to attend the "How to be a Better Substitute" workshop prior to attending substitute orientation. Former substitute teachers, retired teachers, certified teachers, and those who are entering or have completed student teaching within the past 5 years are exempt from this workshop.  Proof will be required.  If the teacher's experience is from another country, teacher did not teach in a K-12 classroom or applicant has not taught in 5 or more years he/she IS required to take the workshop.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

Submit the following documentation to:

A. Applicant Security Check form PBSD 1665 completed and signed. Originals only, no faxes or copies   will be accepted.                                                                                                                                 

B. Official transcript(s) reflecting all semester hours of college credit. (College credit must be earned from a university/college accredited by one of the six regional accreditation associations in the U.S. Credit from foreign colleges may need to be evaluated.)

C.  Employment References: A minimum of 3 references on Employment Reference Form PBSD 0606 are required for all new employees to complete the hiring process.  References must reflect employment covering the last 5 years and must be completed by supervisors.  If you have limited or no previous work experience, personal references will be accepted.  If you are currently attending a college/university, references should be from professors and/or instructors.  References must be signed and dated by the applicant and the evaluator and must include the applicant ID number.

Verification of Self Employment: To be completed only if you are currently, or have been, self-employed during the last 5 years.  Please submit Employment Reference Forms from clients that you have listed on the Verification of Self Employment form.                                                                    

D. Proof of completion of the "How to be a Better Substitute" workshop, if applicable (see above). Original or faxed copies of Completion Certificates are acceptable.   If you do not have one, please provide the date and place you attended the workshop to the HR Technician for verification.                                                                                                                                                             

E. Complete the Automated Orientation forms.  These forms are online and MUST BE completed before being cleared for substitute teaching and prior to moving on to step #4 below. Click on the following link for instructions on completing the automated forms:  Job Aid for Orientation Forms                                                                                                       

  1. Once you have submitted the required documentation, the HR Technician will contact you regarding the status of your application.  If you are cleared to sub, the technician will schedule you for Substitute Orientation and advise you to pick up your Job Offer letter from Recruitment and Retention, A-132 and then you can proceed to the following steps:  Fingerprinting and Drug Test.                                                                                                                               

    1. Note: Fingerprinting and the Pre-Employment Drug Test can only be done after a substitute applicant has been cleared by an HR Technician.  Fingerprints and the drug test MUST BE completed prior to attending Sub Orientation.                                                                                                                                                                                                Fingerprints are thru School Police at the main School District office, 3300 Forest Hill Blvd., $99.00 fee check or money order only.  NOTE: Please check the School Police web page for summer hours.                                                                                                                                                 Fingerprint Hours:

  2. Once you have completed ALL of the requirements listed above you are ready to attend Substitute Orientation  The date and time is listed on your Job Offer letter. PLEASE BE ON TIME.

Substitute Pay

*Retired Teachers (from any state) $ 13.50 per hour (maximum pay)
BA/BS degree or higher $ 13.00 per hour
AA/AS degree or 60+ semester hours $ 11.25 per hour
30-59 semester hours $ 11.00 per hour
Glades supplement $ 3.00 per hour (additional pay)

*To receive maximum pay please bring proof of teacher retirement to Substitute Orientation.

                                                                                                

On PDD days (half days) you are only paid for the hours worked. Subs get paid only for the hours students are in attendance.
