What Type of Training Do I Need for ESOL?
The following information is being provided to answer questions regarding ESOL compliance for educators.
I’m a Category 1 Teacher – What do I need?
This applies to a teacher who is responsible for Language Arts/English, Intensive Reading, or Reading (including English, English Language Arts, Intensive Reading, Elementary and Exceptional Education teachers.)
Five (5) ESOL Endorsement Classes:
* Methods of Teaching ESOL
* Applied Linguistics
Cross Cultural Communication
ESOL Curriculum
Testing and Evaluation of ESOL
* Suggested as best preparation for ESOL K-12 SAE*
Do I have another option?
(1) Yes, take any two classes above and
(2) Take the ESOL K-12 Subject Area Exam (SAE)
**This requirement includes those who have already been certified on the proficiency test method prior to September 10, 2003. Any approved ESOL Endorsement in-service or approved ESOL Endorsement course work taken prior to gaining the ESOL certification may be counted toward the required 120 post-certification hours.
Category 1 teachers MUST add the ESOL Endorsement or ESOL Certification to their teaching certificate to be in compliance.

I’m a Category 2 Teacher – What do I need?
This applies to a secondary education teacher who teaches Social Studies, Mathematics, Science or Computer Literacy.
60 ESOL In-Service points OR 1 of the above classes.
Category 2 teachers CANNOT add ESOL to their teaching certificate. The in-service records will document their compliance.

I’m a Category 3 Teacher – What do I need?
This applies to elective teachers: A teacher who is not in Category 1, 2, or 4 (i.e. Art, Music, Physical Education, Media Specialist, Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapist, Foreign Language teachers, etc.)
18 ESOL In-Service points OR 1 of the above classes.
Category 3 educators CANNOT add ESOL to their teaching certificate. The in-service records will document their compliance.

I’m a Category 4 (administrator or guidance counselor) – What do I need?
60 ESOL In-service points OR 1 of the above classes.
Category 4 personnel CANNOT add ESOL to their teaching certificate. The in-service records will document their compliance.

What happens if I Take the ESOL K-12 Subject Area Exam?
It must be added to your teaching certificate AND you must have two of the ESOL Endorsement classes to keep the ESOL K-12 Certification on your teaching certificate.
