Planning for Successful Futures...
The FY2012-FY2016 Plan and Capital Budget (the Plan) was tentatively adopted by the Palm Beach County School Board members on June 22, 2011 and is scheduled for final adoption on September 14, 2011. The Plan is developed in accordance with the Florida Department of Education guidelines. The Plan is the guiding tool used to ensure adequate facilities are in place to serve our children when needed. The Capital Plan consists of both construction and non-construction projects. Example of construction projects are new schools, school modernizations and maintenance of existing schools, and building additions. Non-construction projects include: technology purchases and maintenance, school buses, and capital equipment. All of the construction and non-construction projects within the plan are financed via: Ad Valorem property tax levies, State allocations, bonds, loans, and existing fund balances. A half cent local sales tax approved by the Palm Beach County voters in November 2004 ended in December 2010. The monies received through this sales tax financed approximately $560 million in capital projects. For more information, click here for the Half Cent Referendum web site. The Plan is updated each year as part of the annual budget adoption process. The Capital Project appropriations are developed on an ongoing basis, and are amended as needed throughout the year. The plan represents the joint effort of the School District, city and county planners, and advisory committees, to provide educational facilities needed to educate Palm Beach County's 170,000+ students. Preparation of the Plan is based on student projections and facility needs. Even though the District is experiencing financial hardships resulting mainly from decreased ad valorem tax and the sun setting of the half cent sales tax, the School District is constantly seeking ways to provide the best education facility for the students. This year's capital budget includes $423 million in construction projects with a total budget of $718 million. Please click here for Summary of Capital Improvement Plan. |
