RED RIBBON WEEK

Adolescent alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) use negatively impacts students’ academic performance. The academic consequences of ATOD use, which include absenteeism, lower grades, disruptive behaviors, suspensions and below grade-level test scores, pose a significant and severe problem for the entire school community.
The Red Ribbon Campaign is a national and state initiative which has become the annual catalyst for mobilizing schools and communities in alcohol and drug prevention messaging. National Red Ribbon Week, celebrated the last week in October, serves as a tribute to DEA Special Agent Camarena, who in 1985 was kidnapped and brutally tortured and murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico. This tragic event produced an immediate outpouring of grief, but over time has generated a strong and consistent sense of purpose across America to prevent our children from ever using alcohol, tobacco or drugs. That commitment to purpose is being kept alive through the hard work of thousands of Americans ---particularly our young people---who participate in a wide-range of Red Ribbon Week events and activities during the last week in October.
Red Ribbon Week is the most far-reaching and well-known drug prevention event in America. It is estimated that over 80 million Americans participate in Red Ribbon events every year. All Palm Beach County Schools participate in Red Ribbon activities. Student Intervention Services in the Department of Safe Schools addresses the issue of adolescent substance use by supporting October 22 – 30, 2011 as Red Ribbon Week.
Each year, Red Ribbon Week provides Palm Beach County students and adults with an opportunity to renew our commitment to a healthy and drug-free lifestyle and show our dedication to education and prevention efforts in our schools and communities. Participation in Red Ribbon Week helps our schools practice a Single School Culture for climate, where our students know that they are cared for and supported.
Student Intervention Services in the Department of Safe Schools emails age-appropriate information and activities to character coaches at every school. These coaches can distribute the information and activities to the department/grade level chairpersons at each school. The materials support academic standards and include FCAT practice materials. Teachers may choose their level of participation through their selection of materials and activities.
