The number of overweight children has doubled in the last 30 years. It’s now estimated that one in five children in the United States is overweight. This is a serious concern. Excess body at can increase a child’s risk of developing many health problems, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma or sleep apnea. And, being overweight can have a negative emotional affect on children, possibly leading to difficulty with peer relationships, low self-esteem and depression.
