What is Bullying Awareness and Intervention?
Bullying Awareness and Intervention is a 30-point in-service component designed to equip educators with the knowledge and materials necessary to effectively address the topic of mistreatment on their campuses. While this component has been in place in the District since 2005, the anti-bullying efforts in the State received a large boost in 2008 with the passage of the Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up For All Students Act. All Districts, including ours, now have policies and procedures in place to give strong, consistent, and unified messages concerning the expectations surrounding proper interpersonal treatment.
What is the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program?
Dan Olweus (pronounced Ol-vay’-us) from Norway, the so-called “Father of Bullying Research,” designed a comprehensive program for preventing bullying in schools. It has been internationally translated and utilized. His program includes curriculum and training for teachers and students. This program includes school-wide, classroom, individual, and community interventions. In addition, it includes a thorough bullying survey, with his company offering a scoring and interpretation service that gives the school community in-depth data concerning the status of bullying on their campuses. Kim Mazauskas, Bullying Prevention Coordinator with the Department of Safe Schools is a state-recognized trainer and policy contact on the issue of bullying and cyber-bullying, a certified Olweus trainer, and can answer questions regarding both programs.
Is there a cost for training?
Schools can schedule free in-service training about bullying through the Department of Safe Schools.
In addition, information about the costs and procedures for implementing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program can be obtained by contacting Kim Mazauskas at (561) 982 -0922, or PX 50922.
