Conflict Resolution Action Research

What is Conflict Resolution?

Conflict Resolution is a 60-point in-service component designed to allow teachers to teach the attitudes and skills of peaceful living to the students in their classes, using grade-appropriate curriculum from the Peace Education Foundation.  The sub-skills that allow students to successfully resolve conflict involve elements of emotional intelligence: the ability to know one’s feelings, the ability to communicate one’s feelings, recognizing feelings in others, managing relationships, and motivating oneself.   The curriculum offers approximately 25 lessons per grade level that address these skills of social and emotional learning.  The components of the project include Community-Building, Recognizing the Importance of Perception, Understanding Conflict, Using the Peace Rules, Anger Management,  and Utilizing Effective Communication.

Conflict Resolution Action Research is a separate 60-point in-service component designed to allow teachers, office personnel, administrators, and paraprofessionals the opportunity to learn the philosophy, strategies, curriculum, and practices of effective conflict resolution.  Participants will conduct their own supplemental internet research into conflict resolution sub-components and design an application of conflict resolution for their places of employment, recognizing that different participants will be able to apply the practices in different ways, depending on their work context and job responsibilities.

How is the Conflict Resolution Action Research Component conducted?

The classroom component of the training is generally conducted on two Saturdays and two weekday afternoons over a one-semester period.  It has been offered at least once per school year since 1995 and is generally offered regionally.

Are these components considered “in-field”?

Yes, and the only costs are for curriculum in the Conflict Resolution Component.
