Johnson Scholars Program

The Johnson Scholarship Foundation partners with the College Success Program by providing a scholarship incentive program to five target high schools. Funding has been provided for the support of the Johnson Scholars through a cohort format. The cohorts meet regularly to address their barrier to college readiness and take college tours to increase motivation for setting and fulfilling their post secondary education plans. When the cohort reaches their graduation year, ten scholars per school receive a $10,000 scholarship to be disbursed over the four years of college. The overall impact to the students through 2015 will be $1.7 million dollars. The first scholarship awards will be available in May 2011.
The Johnson Scholars Program focuses services on the following five high schools:
- Lake Worth High School
- Palm Beach Lakes High School
- Palm Beach Gardens High School
- Santaluces High School
- William T. Dwyer High School
The program provides a stipend for a coordinator, as well as designated Johnson Scholars Student Services (SAT/ACT Retakes, Campus Visits, and College Application Fees) for the number of cohorts the schools monitor.
Fifteen freshman students will be selected from each high school each year to participate in the Johnson Scholars Program. Those students selected must remain in their groups (cohorts) for their four years of high school to be eligible to compete for the scholarship.
As of FY2010, there are twelve Johnson Scholar Cohorts across the five high schools.
If selected to be in a cohort, the students must:
- Attend all Johnson Scholars cohort meetings
- Meet with the Johnson Scholars Coordinator to make a plan for high school success and then follow it.
- Be a responsible student (attend classes, complete assignments, study for tests, follow directions and plan to succeed).
- Work to be ready to meet the assessment goals necessary to go to college (FCAT, PSAT, SAT, ACT, CLAST).
- Develop a written post secondary success plan and follow it.
Benefits to the students selected to participate in the program are:
- Assistance with making and maintaining a High School Success Plan
- Step-by-step assistance in planning for and applying for college
- Opportunity to visit local and state colleges with the Johnson Cohort
- Assistance in making a post secondary success plan and guidance to follow it
- The opportunity to meet friends with the same goal for success as yours
