Peaceful Schools International
What is Peaceful Schools International?
Peaceful Schools International (PSI) is an international non-profit organization whose home office is in Nova Scotia, Canada. It was founded in 2001 by Hetty van Gurp, a former teacher and principal whose oldest son, Ben Adams, was killed at age 14 in an incident of bullying at school. Following this personal tragedy, Hetty made it her mission to support schools, worldwide, that make peacemaking a central focus of their identity.
What is the mission of PSI?
PSI serves as a clearinghouse of ideas and resources for peaceful living for schools at all levels. It is non-prescriptive, with local students, teachers, and administrators shaping their own peace efforts. Schools may join at any time, and membership entitles them to monthly newsletters and ideas for peace and community-building activities, gathered from practitioners the world over. PSI also recognizes schools’ achievements by awarding qualifying sites a membership flag and certificate once the school successfully addresses six key areas that indicate the intention to create peaceful, safe, and respectful climates for all stakeholders.
How many schools are members of PSI internationally and locally?
As of December 2009, there were over 300 schools in PSI, representing 15 countries. Palm Beach County is home to 11 member schools.
Is there a cost for membership?
Schools pay $100 to join PSI and pay $50 per year to maintain their membership. Every person who works for PSI is a volunteer, including Hetty, herself.
How can I learn more about PSI?
