District Win's U.S. EPA
"2007 Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools National Model of Sustained Excellence Award"
On November 5th, 2007 we learned that we have won the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Model of Sustained Excellence Award. As noted on the U.S. EPA’s website for this award:
“Winners of the Model of Sustained Excellence Award demonstrate an enduring commitment to student and staff health and wellness by building, evaluating, sustaining, and institutionalizing robust and highly effective school IAQ management programs.”
We can thank Chris Skerlec, Director of the Environmental Control Office, for putting together an outstanding application; however, as I’m sure he will agree it has taken a lot of work and cooperation from every department (esp. the Environmental Control Office and Maintenance & Plant Operations) to earn this award. Chris will pick up the award on all of our behalf on December 7th at the Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools National Symposium in Washington, D.C.
For more information on the award go to: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/schools/sustainedexcellenceaward.html- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

FACMAN Wins Prestigious Awards
April 2007

The Facilities Management Division brought credit to the school district in April when it won two Sunshine Medallion Awards. The Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA) makes annual awards to honor districts, schools and departments that demonstrate exemplary public relations projects, programs and publications. The 2007 award for Best State Education Fundraiser (for a large school district) recognized the Division’s successful High School Summer Internships program and the Golf Outing that supports it. On top of that when SUNSPRA considered the first-place finishers in all categories, FACMAN’s entry took the Best-in-Show Award for Best Event. Congratulations to all in the staff who work hard to make the Outing a success each year and who mentor our interns.

District Wins EPA Award for Indoor Air Quality
For the past several years the School District has been replacing worn carpet with vinyl tile, centrally controlling air conditioning and humidity and educating employees on their role in controlling indoor quality. This year those efforts have been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which awarded the School District with the 2003 IAQ Tools for Schools Excellence Award.
The award was received at the annual Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Symposium in Washington, D.C. where Acting EPA Administrator Marianne Horinko commented, “They (schools and school districts that participate in EPA’s program) provide a model for schools nationwide to proactively manage indoor air quality, which leads to a better leaning environment.” The award is given to school districts which have implemented effective programs in their schools ranging from design schools free of toxins and other hazards to developing district-wide policies for continuous training and maintenance.

Chris Skerlec, Environmental Control Officer for the School District of Palm Beach County, accepted the award on behave of the District, however, he is quick to point out that it took the efforts of a lot of people to earn this award. Besides the Environmental Control Office which investigates indoor air quality issues, Maintenance & Plant Operations and the school centers themselves deserve a great deal of credit for addressing potential programs. Through the efforts of Facilities staff and the schools, over thirty schools have received the Asthma-Friendly designation from the American Lung Association.
