    Purpose and Functions

Extended Learning has the primary role of District elementary and middle afterschool programs oversight including before and after school care and winter, spring, and summer camps. Elementary afterschool programs are fee-based, cost recovery programs addressed in S.B. Policy 8.131. Middle school  programs are funded by Safe Schools appropriations which ensure students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals attend before/after school for free, while some programs receive parent fees. The department collaborates with District, governmental, and community agencies to improve and expand academic, enrichment and recreational opportunities for approximately 20,000 pre-kindergarten through school-age children in 93 District elementary schools, 70+ camps in elementary schools, and 36 middle school afterschool programs.

The department also provides programmatic and fiscal management support, technical assistance, and training to District afterschool program staff; coordinates community-sponsored afterschool initiatives; and oversees implementation of the Academic Enrichment Initiatives in afterschool programs. The department oversees:

    • 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC)
    • Middle School Course Recovery program
