During the Board Workshop on June 23, Superintendent Donald E. Fennoy II outlined the changes to existing COVID-19 protocols that will take effect when schools reopen on August 10 for the 2021-2022 school year.

“Our back to school theme will be Your Time to Shine as we will be reopening schools fully to in-person instruction and returning to normal activity that will empower and engage our students academically and emotionally,” Fennoy said.

Changes to current protocols for the 2021-2022 school year:

  • All students will return to face-to-face instruction. For families who wish to remain in virtual education, Palm Beach Virtual and Florida Virtual are options for online instruction.
  • Facial coverings will be optional for students, staff, visitors, and employees.
  • Social distancing will be encouraged to the extent possible.
  • Students who test positive for COVID-19 will not be assigned to distance learning when self-isolating or in quarantine. While students must remain home, makeup work will be provided to the student.
  • Middle school and high school athletics will return in accordance with the Florida High School Athletics Association. Concessions will also reopen.
  • Clubs and school performances will resume in-person across all grade levels.
  • Field trips will resume, as well as before and afterschool programs.
  • Visitors and school volunteers can return to schools and must comply with all directions from school or office administrators.
  • Students must continue to Register Your Ride for bus transportation.
  • Facial coverings are optional on school buses and social distancing is still encouraged at bus stops.
  • Lunches will be served and consumed in cafeterias. Breakfasts will be served in the cafeteria and grab-and-go breakfast is available where offered. Breakfast can be consumed in the classroom at the school’s discretion.
  • Students will utilize student IDs for meals (recommended as of the first day of school and mandatory starting October 4th).

Current protocols that will remain in place:

  • The COVID-19 vaccination remains optional for all students and staff. Information on where to find the COVID-19 vaccination is available on the COVID-19 Vaccination Information webpage.
  • Contact tracing will continue to be conducted by the Florida Department of Health and Health Care District in collaboration with District staff. School nurses will continue to provide COVID-19 rapid tests where available, for symptomatic students with parental permission.
  • Plexiglass will remain in common areas, and signage will remain to control student movement patterns.
  • Each school has a Clorox 360 electrostatic cleaning device for enhanced cleaning.
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitation in all schools and offices will continue.
  • Group restrooms will continue to have enhanced cleaning up to three times per day, and supplies will be continually replenished.
  • MERV-13 filters will continue to be used on all compatible units.
  • Students must register for bus transportation in the Register My Ride portal. School bus drivers will continue to sanitize high-touch areas between routes and buses will continue to be sanitized with electrostatic sprayers.
  • The COVID-19 Dashboard will be in effect for the 2021-2022 school year.

The changes to current policies will be brought to the School Board for formal adoption later this summer. In the meantime, current COVID-19 protocols remain in effect for summer school and activities conducted on school campuses prior to the start of school for 2021-2022.

The Superintendent is afforded the authority by the School Board to suspend portions of the COVID-19 protocols for students, staff, and visitors when necessary.
