Positive Behavior Support (PBS) & CHAMPS

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, three-tiered framework for effectively establishing and maintaining school-wide systems that promote a single school culture that supports all students and their behavioral, academic, and social success.

PBIS emphasizes teaching students to behave in ways that support a safe and welcoming school environment where students and staff are responsible and respectful. 

PBIS promotes a proactive and preventative approach to student discipline. Schools are responsible for implementing appropriate research-based interventions in areas of need to maximize students’ opportunities for learning and academic success.

Each school develops and implements a data-driven PBIS action plan, which includes procedures for defining, teaching, and reinforcing school-wide expectations and guidelines for discouraging and addressing inappropriate behavior.

PBIS is for ALL students, teachers, administrators, and non-instructional staff. The PBIS framework applies to students of all abilities, exceptionalities, ages, and demographics. Successful implementation of PBIS encourages a style of classroom management that optimizes conditions for learning, effectively promoting academic success.

Families are encouraged to implement PBIS practices at home by building routines and explicitly teaching those routines with behavior expectations. More information and resources about PBIS for families can be found here.
