The Jupiter High School Warrior Dance Team has been invited to perform in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, but the once-in-a-lifetime honor comes with a hefty price tag. The team needs to raise $45,000 by October 1 to secure their ticket to The Big Apple.
The team of 13 dancers and two chaperones received their invitation to the parade at the end of the school year and couldn’t start fundraising until school was back in session.
“We didn’t think [going] was an option, really,” said Becca Desjarlais, the dance coach and a teacher at the school. “But then our principal said ‘Let’s do this! Let’s get the girls to New York.’”
Each dancer has to raise $3,000 to cover the trip over the Thanksgiving holiday.
The team is a new addition to the school, evolving from a club to a competitive team last year. “I think we got invited because we won first place in our first state competition,” Desjarlais said. There’s no doubt that the girls have talent on the stage or football field when they perform, but their fundraising skills are being put to the test: A $400 deposit per student is due by September 1.
The team has created a sponsorship letter asking for any donation big or small to adopt a dancer and help each of them take this trip of a lifetime. Donations can also be made online through School Cash Online.
