Pirtle Construction: The $2M Dollar Carve Out
Pirtle Construction: The Two Million Dollar Carve-Out

Pirtle is proud to be the construction manager on the Greater Lake Worth High School 03-000. Pirtle, with their SBE sub-consultant MCO Construction, and in collaboration with, The Office of Diversity in Business Practices, held a series of seven customized outreach workshops over the course of 2020. The team conducted one outreach workshop in-person before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. The remaining workshops were held online without a hiccup.
Pirtle, along with two other construction management firms are in a Pilot Program to test, measure, and validate second-tier SBE data. Pirtle reached out to many of the District-certified small businesses online, and set into motion the steps to connect those certified businesses to Pirtle’s large trade contractors. The intent is to maximize SBE participation on the high school project. "In order for any SBE program to be successful, it has to be ‘strategic’ 'equitable' and ‘intentional.’ Pirtle has demonstrated their intent and commitment by looking for innovative ways to not only provide SBEs with opportunities, but to also help them grow and develop. Equity is not an initiative or a program, it is an outcome." says Dicky Sykes, Director of the Office of Diversity in Business Practices.
Pirtle has carved out a portion of the High School 03-000 project for a SBE general contractor. A component of the high school project is an 8,500 square foot athletics amenity Field House, separate from the central campus of the school. Pirtle developed a bid package for the build-out of the Field House building that was solicited only to three African-American owned SBE general contractors. Hatcher Construction won and will be the general contractor for the Field House build-out, valued at approximately two million dollars. Pirtle’s project management team will work closely with Hatcher to oversee the Field House build-out and provide mentoring advice as needed.
Overall, Pirtle’s estimated SBE stats on the project shows they will exceed the goal. They have worked closely with the Office of Diversity in Business Practices and have demonstrated their intent through actions about what they wanted to achieve. Kudos to Jacob Katz, Senior Vice President of Pirtle Construction, and their entire team, for helping District-certified small businesses grow one “carve-out” at a time. There are some serious smiles underneath those masks!
