The School District of Palm Beach County is committed to engaging parents and the community as equal partners to assist with empowering each student to reach his or her highest potential. To strengthen this commitment, the Departments of Federal and State Programs and Multicultural Education hosted a North Region Family Engagement Night at Northboro Elementary on October 5, 2017. The family engagement session provided timely and family-friendly activities designed to increase student achievement.
With approximately 350 people in attendance, we were able to provide families from Title I schools with hands-on, interactive games to promote reading and math fluency at the elementary level. We also provided reading vocabulary and math fluency at the secondary levels. Families of elementary children learned how to incorporate a literacy game focused on sight words and families of students in secondary schools learned how to incorporate prefixes and suffixes into their daily routine that will help their children meet grade level expectations in reading. In addition, families shared in competitive fun as they learned how to increase math fluency by helping their child with appropriate math facts at any grade level.
Families walked away from the event grateful and excited to enhance learning at home. Parents and guardians commented “I really needed this,” “Now I know how to work with my child,” and “Amazing” as the night came to an end. Families walked out with the materials that they learned to use to promote learning and a backpack full of books. The ultimate tear jerker and reinforcement of the importance of families and schools working together was the comment from one grandmother who stated, “I had chemo today and was not feeling well but came anyway. I’m glad that I did; it was well worth it!”
