Florida Power & Light 'Power to Care' Volunteer Event
Florida Power & Light and Maintenance and Plant Operations have partnered together to complete beautification projects at various schools in the District through FPL's 'Power To Care' Volunteer Event Program. In conjunction with input from M&PO and the Area Superintendents, schools are selected for the program based on FPL's criterion of school location and the opportunity for both inside and outside improvement projects.
Once the school is selected, a scope of work is developed that can be effectively accomplished within the available time and with the available resources. To ensure a successful project, M&PO organizes supplies & materials and makes sure necessary preparation work is completed prior to the actual volunteer event. FPL helps provide funding and volunteers to accomplish the actual work on the day of the event. The end result is an 'extreme makeover' for the lucky school.
Work begins about 7:00 A.M. on the day of the event and continues until about noon. Under the supervision of M&PO staff, the volunteers paint murals, perform general painting, mulch, lay sod, prepare planter boxes, and perform various other tasks around the school. During the last three years, beautification projects have been completed at six PBCSD schools.
