Pahokee Middle School Principal Suspends Student For Weapon On Campus – Incident A "Teachable Moment"

This is an update to information we had prepared earlier for our school community.  A student at Pahokee Middle School was found to have brought an unloaded .22 caliber handgun to school today.  When the information was received from another student this morning, the campus was immediately placed in lockdown, the school was searched and the weapon was found.  As a precaution, the school remained in lockdown for the remainder of the day.  The student involved is being suspended with a recommendation for expulsion.

Our students, staff and School Police responded to this unfortunate situation very well, and based on their training.  Students brought information forward, as we ask them to do, staff took the information seriously,  and School Police  conducted a thorough investigation and search.

This is a teachable moment for all of our students and parents.  We are reminding our students about their need to take their education seriously and to conduct themselves in a safe manner, avoiding  weapons and unsafe situations of any kind and reporting information to responsible adults. We are  appealing to our parents to be very aware of what their children are doing at all times, what is in their possession and what concerns and fears are on their minds.

Our school staff has been and will continue to be vigilant in keeping our students and staff safe, and we need the entire community to support us.

Thank you.

Lavoise Smith, Principal, Pahokee Middle School
