Florida Odyssey of the Mind Competition Coming to Suncoast High School-Competition Focuses On Creative Problem Solving

Students from Palm Beach, Broward and St. Lucie counties will be participating in the Palms Region of Florida Odyssey of the Mind regional tournament on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Suncoast Community High School. Suncoast is located at 1717 Avenue S, Riviera Beach 33404.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

“We would like to invite parents, administrators, teachers, volunteers and the community to visit the tournament and see first-hand students’ wacky and amazingly creative solutions to this year’s selected problems,” said Jennifer Manikas, Florida Odyssey of the Mind regional director.

The competition involves all students, not just “gifted” students, and reflects the district’s focus and success in encouraging all students to enroll in Advance Placement, high level Math and other rigorous course work.

From the regional competition, the winners go on to the state competition at the University of Central Florida and then to the world tournament with US and international students at the University of Maryland.
