C.O. TAYLOR/KIRKLANE ELEMENTARY HONORS HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR

As part of their curriculum, fifth grade students at C.O. Taylor/Kirklane Elementary have been studying the Holocaust.  According to Literacy Coach Ann Jackman, “It is a topic our students find very interesting and has prompted many dynamic classroom discussions.”   Ms. Jackman, with the support of Maureen Carter in Elementary Curriculum, wrote a grant to the inSIGHT Through Education Foundation to purchase nine classroom sets of Daniel’s Story for the fifth grade classes. Daniel’s Story is a realistic, historical fiction account of a young boy’s story of living through the atrocity of the Holocaust.

The inSIGHT Through Education Foundation generously and graciously provided the funding for the project and it was provided across the entire grade level.  The culminating activity will occur onThursday, May 22, 2014 when fifth grade students get to meet Zelda Fuksman, a Holocaust survivor who will speak to the students about her experiences and answer the many questions they will have.  Ms. Fuksman’s discussion will be followed by a breakfast given in her honor with the fifth grade students, teachers and administration.
