District’s Principal of the Year Appointed to Lead Carver MS

DELRAY BEACH – The 2017-2018 Principal of the Year Sandra Edwards is coming home to Delray Beach where she will lead Carver Middle School as the new principal. Her appointment was announced at the Board Meeting on February 21.
“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Edwards said at the Board Meeting. She talked about being born and raised in Delray Beach and her excitement about the new position being a homecoming of sorts for her. She also thanked her family and professional mentors who have supported her throughout her career.
Edwards has a total of 22 years of experience as an educator and began serving the District in 2001. She started as a kindergarten teacher at Pine Grove Elementary before moving on to become a school counselor at Orchard View Elementary and an assistant principal at Odyssey Middle. She most recently served as principal at Washington Elementary School where she had been since 2012.
It was during her time as principal at Washington Elementary that she was named the School District’s 2017-2018 Principal of the Year. When she took over as principal at Washington Elementary, the school had been placed on a list from the state as being one of the lowest performing schools in Florida.
However, by the end of the 2016-2017 school year, the school raised its grade from an “F” to a “B” in the state accountability system, and 3rd graders improved their English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency by 29 percent over the previous school year, the highest increase of any school in Palm Beach County. Washington Elementary students exceeded expectations, ranking in the 99th percentile in the state for ELA learning gains.
