Students Represent PBC at UN Assembly

District Students Are Models of Success at United Nations Assembly
Posted on 04/16/2019

Sixteen 4th and 5th grade students from S.D. Spady Elementary School traveled to New York City this past February as part of their school's Model United Nations 2019 delegation. Two of the student delegates (Morgan Probst and Isabel Rodrigues), presented resolutions at the United Nations General Assembly floor to their fellow delegates, about 1,500 students from around the world.

Model United Nations is an educational simulation in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. The idea is to engage students and encourage them to develop a deeper understanding of current world issues. Students use speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.

The students from S.D. Spady earned their conference trip and achievements by working as virtual United Nations delegates, writing position papers and speeches to help solve issues of global importance such as alternate energy forms and the eradication of xenophobia. The students and their teachers will be recognized at the April school board meeting for their achievement.

“We are so excited about our amazing student delegates getting well-deserved recognition from the school board for their work,” said Eric Gonzalez, a teacher at the school who worked with and traveled with the students to New York.
