Physical Education in the District Receives Awards for Excellence

The Society of Health & Physical Educators (SHAPE Florida), recently recognized several District educators for their contributions to the physical education and health of students and their school community.

Kristina Kirk, a physical education teacher at John I. Leonard High School was named the High School Teacher of the Year.

Eileen Tirado, the District’s only adapted physical education teacher, received SHAPE Florida's Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year award. Tirado is also the national winner for the award. "I am humbled and honored to represent Palm Beach County School District and Adapted Physical Education, alongside my colleagues in this way," Tirado said. "I am blessed to work with the most amazing students, teachers, and paraprofessionals. Thank you so much for your support to our Physical Education team!"

2021 National SHAPE America Teacher of the Year; Eileen Tirado Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year

Eric Stern, the District’s K-12 Physical, Health, and Driver Education Administrator received SHAPE Florida's Legislative award. The award is given to Florida legislators or other noteworthy persons who make a significant impact on SHAPE Florida legislative and/or advocacy goals in a given year or over a period of several years. 

Stern was also the recipient of SHAPE Florida's Peter Everett award. It is the organization’s most prestigious honor, handed out in recognition of outstanding professional contributions to SHAPE Florida professions.

Deputy Superintendent Keith Oswald and District 4 School Board Member Erica Whitfield celebrated the award recipients during a board room ceremony.
