Crestwood Middle School offers a Pre-Business/Information Technology Academy in an educational setting dedicated to the development of academic, social, and creative skills, with the goal of creating responsible citizens.

Students are introduced to the field of business and related careers through the use of information technology. Students participate in the co-curricular student organization, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) where they can earn certificates and awards for their student portfolios, in addition to earning an Internet Business Associate Certificate in their final year in the Academy.

The three-year program starts in the sixth grade, with students learning HTML CSS and JavaScript. In seventh grade, students build on their knowledge and create multi-page websites, enabling them to take the Site Development Associate industry certification test. It’s not uncommon for the Academy to have a 100% pass rate on the test.

By the time they reach eighth grade, students are learning about the internet technology side of the Pre-Business Academy. Students take an industry certification exam for the course where they can earn high school credit.

“Students gain valuable skills and knowledge by taking apart, cleaning, and rebuilding computers in the school to create new computer labs,” said George Jenness, the school’s IT teacher.

Companies expect IT professionals to multitask, in addition to demonstrating management capabilities. To succeed in the industry, students will need good leadership and people skills to go along with their technological skills. The students at Crestwood are gaining those abilities and experience, while simultaneously enjoying the curriculum.

“It’s fun actually,” said Xiomara Dorcius, a student in the Academy. “I learn how to program computers. I want to be a professional in the IT business because it is a field that I like.”
