The School District of Palm Beach County hosted the annual Palm Beach County Regional High School Ethics Bowl on February 1, an event held in collaboration with Florida Atlantic University’s LeRoy Collins Public Ethics Academy. The tournament provides competition for teams from high schools around the County to analyze ethical situations and responses.

This year’s event included teams of students from four District-operated schools, West Boca Raton, Suncoast, Park Vista, and Atlantic High, as well as one private school, Oxbridge Academy. Held completely online due to COVID-19 restrictions, teams were separated into private Google Meet rooms where they collaborated in writing and shared digital documents.

The teams created the responses to the ethical situations presented to them and responded to questions by the judges. The opposing team then presented a rebuttal to provide the quality of their analyses.

Judges included School Board Vice Chair Karen Brill and School Board Member Erica Whitfield as well as other notable members of the community including Kimberly Lea, president of Keiser University, city council members, and Judges Samantha Feuer and Sarah Shullman of the 15th Circuit Court.

“Students who competed this year were exposed to real-life problems and their well-reasoned responses reflect well on this generation,” said event judge Bill Bone, the founding partner of Larmoyeaux and Bone Trial Lawyers.

Ultimately, Oxbridge Academy Team 1 took first prize, with West Boca Raton Community High School Team 2 coming in second, and Team 1 earning a third-place finish. Oxbridge Academy’s Team 2 finished in fourth place. Students on the top four teams received scholarships, in addition to a monetary donation that will go toward supporting the growth of the programs at their respective schools. Scholarships ranged from $4,750 to $1,850 per team.
