The School District of Palm Beach County proudly joins the state in recognizing “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!”

The foundation for reading begins at birth. Reading, talking, and playing with children stimulates their brains and sparks the connections that become the building blocks for reading.

Reading aloud to your child is the most important thing you can do for building a successful reader! Reading aloud benefits students of all ages, even those in high school.

K-2 literacy is especially important. Reading on grade level by third grade sets a child up for academic success throughout their lives. Students who are not proficient in reading before entering fourth grade are much more likely than their peers to struggle in school.

Ideally, fourth graders are no longer learning to read, they’re “reading to learn." The School District is committed to supporting teachers and students during these critical years and our leadership is focused on providing them with the resources needed to succeed.

By reading for at least 15 minutes a day, students start seeing significant gains in reading achievement. Students who read between 30 minutes to an hour per day see the greatest gains of all.
