Students, Staff, and Parents:

The School District of Palm Beach County is pleased to announce that Chief Financial Officer Mike Burke will serve as interim superintendent of schools while the School Board conducts a national search for a superintendent and selects a permanent replacement.

During the July 21 school board meeting, Board Members voted unanimously to offer the position to Mr. Burke, which he graciously accepted. Mr. Burke has a long and successful career with the District and is also well-regarded on the national level through his involvement with the Council of Great City Schools.

As Chief Financial Officer he is tasked with overseeing the District’s $3.8 billion annual budget. As the longest-serving member of the District’s Executive Leadership team, Mr. Burke has led the District’s financial and information technology divisions and worked closely with academic leadership.

Mr. Burke’s tenure as interim superintendent will begin after the Board votes on his contract during the July 28 board meeting. Superintendent Donald E. Fennoy II, who tendered his resignation to the School Board on July 13, has agreed to stay on as a consultant to support Mr. Burke during the transition, in a mutually agreed upon capacity.

Mr. Burke’s appointment as interim superintendent will not prohibit him from applying for the permanent position.

The School Board assures students, staff, parents and the community that the high-quality education that children have received will continue through this transition period and beyond.
