Mike Burke was sworn in as the 27th Superintendent of the School District of Palm Beach County during a Special Meeting of the School Board on Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

Mr. Burke was sworn in by School Board Chairman Frank Barbieri. He was joined by his wife Kristin for the ceremony. He immediately took his place at the dais for the remainder of the School Board meeting, which included the approval of the $4.0 billion budget he oversaw as Chief Financial Officer, the role he held prior to taking on the Superintendent position.

“I am excited to work with all of our colleagues, 23,000 strong, to move this District forward and make our schools a place where all students feel welcome and have the opportunity to pursue their dreams,” Mr. Burke said.

As you will learn from Mr. Burke’s biography, he first joined the School District in 1998. During his time with the District, he has served as Budget Director, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Financial Officer, making him the longest-serving administrator on the District’s Executive Cabinet. He has also served as the District’s chief negotiator during his tenure.

As the CFO, Mr. Burke helped the School District navigate the Great Recession and other budgetary challenges, as well as overseeing the recent Federal ESSER funds distributed to the District. He also led the District’s financial team in obtaining clean financial audits and excellent credit ratings. Additionally, he has been instrumental in gaining support for the approval of multiple referendums passed by Palm Beach County voters.

“Mr. Burke has always worked well with his academic colleagues, and I’m confident that will continue through this transitional period to make sure the needs of our students, teachers, principals, support employees, and community are met,” said Barbieri.

Per his employment contract, Mr. Burke shall perform the duties of Superintendent on an interim basis until the Board selects a successor. In his current role, Mr. Burke is eligible to apply for consideration for the permanent position once the District opens the nationwide search.
