Boca West Children’s Foundation, through one of its partner agencies Roots and Wings, donated $10,000 to support programs at select Palm Beach County District schools. The money will go toward honoring teachers and staff with Above and Beyond Awards that are given to school employees selected by their principal for their exceptional efforts.

The donation will also support Project Uplift, a free afterschool reading program for first through fourth graders attending Title I elementary schools in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach. The program reaches more than 500 struggling readers with the goal of ensuring third graders pass the Florida Standards Assessment in reading.

“We are very grateful to have been chosen to provide this outstanding support,” said Ted Hoskinson, the founder of Roots and Wings. “Due to COVID-19, many children have suffered serious learning losses, making this gift more valuable than ever.”

Roots and Wings initiated a pilot program of Project Uplift during the 2017-2018 school year at Pine Grove Elementary School to help children in the third grade with reading and reading comprehension. The program was highly successful in improving the test scores of its first-year participants.

Students were enthusiastic about participating, and 94% showed growth at the end of the school year. Orchard View Elementary School is one campus set to benefit from the donation, and they are eager to replicate the reading program success.

“Because of Roots and Wings, Orchard View has been able to grow from a D to a C to a B, and eventually an A because of their support,” said Lisa Lee, the school’s Principal. “The support they get from Boca West Children’s Foundation is going to help all the Roots and Wings schools, Orchard View will shine bright, and our children will be able to read.”

Boca West Children’s Foundation ia a major philanthropic entity in south Palm Beach County that supports a handful of regional charities benefiting children’s causes. This donation is in line with the organization’s mission and continued dedication to making a positive difference in the community.

“There’s a quote that says, ‘up until third grade you learn to read, and from third grade you read to learn’, and unfortunately this past year during COVID, the third graders and below are seriously behind,” said Pamela Weinroth, the Foundation’s Executive Director. “That’s why we wanted to help Ted with his mission that is even more needed after this year, and going forward.”

In addition to Orchard View Elementary, the following schools will also benefit from the donated funds:

Banyan Creek Elementary • Morikami Park Elementary
• Boca Raton Elementary • Pine Grove Elementary
• Coral Sunset Elementary • Plumosa School of the Arts
• Crosspointe Elementary • Poinciana STEM Elementary
