The Haitian Educators Association (HEA) of Palm Beach recently announced the recipients of its 2020-2021 school year scholarship awards. The organization presented a total of $8,000 in scholarships to eight Palm Beach County students, each of whom received $1,000.

The HEA is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide scholarships to English Language Learners of Haitian descent who demonstrate academic excellence, evidenced by a minimum 3.2 GPA. Students must also have been accepted at a higher educational, vocational, or technical institution.

“Many of the students who graduate from high school are motivated to attend college, but are unable to do so because of financial constraints,” said Vivianne Jean-Francois, president of the HEA and a School Counselor in the District. “Together, we are trying to make a difference in their lives.”

Additionally, to receive the scholarship, each student provided two letters of recommendation from teachers, supervisors, or community leaders, and submitted an essay with their response to the question “describe why this scholarship is important to you.”

Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients:

• Woodny Alerte – South Tech Academy

• Weenny M. Antoine – Palm Beach Gardens Community High

• Vanessa Belizaire – Atlantic Community High

• Aliana D. Bien-Aime – Glades Central Community High

• Rodney B. Bien-Aime – Palm Beach Lakes Community High

The Haitian Educators Association was founded in February 2015 by the late Elcy Andre, a veteran educator who taught in the School District of Palm Beach County for 38 years. The HEA is a collaborative effort between Haitian professionals and other interested community organizations to support high-achieving Haitian students in their pursuit of higher education.
