Honesty is truly the best policy for Aleefa Ali, a student at Gove Elementary School in Belle Glade.

“She is a great example of a trustworthy student,” said Dennis Pozo, a sixth grade teacher at Gove Elementary. “Whenever I need a messenger to report to another teacher, I can always count on her to go directly where she is sent and not to make any detours along the way. She is also a trustworthy student in that she always tells the truth.”

Pozo also recounted a time when Ali was able to accurately relay important information about a situation that arose in class.

“We knew we could count on her to give an accurate account of what occurred,” he said.

That’s why Ali is being recognized for the character trait of demonstrating trustworthiness through the District’s Character Now! Program. Ali noted that trustworthiness is important to her because it also leads to other positive characteristics.

“I am a Gove Cat [school mascot]! I am caring, accountable, trustworthy, and safe,” she said. “It is an amazing feeling to know that everyone thinks I am trustworthy. I hope that people will know the importance of being trustworthy after seeing what it means to me!"

The District’s character education program called Character Now!, was updated this year to incorporate new state standards with existing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Positive Behavior Support (PBS) initiatives.

The following are the themes for Character Now!:

• Showing empathy and kindness.
• Being responsible.
• Having a growth mindset.
• Demonstrating trustworthiness.
• Demonstrating respect.
• Being a good citizen.

Students are provided with instruction in the standards through the SEL and PBS initiatives. They are then recognized by their schools for demonstrating the character themes.
