Week of SELebrating

During the week of March 7-11, the School District of Palm Beach County will celebrate its District-wide campaign for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). According to the Birth to 22 organization, SEL is about supporting children, youth, and adults in achieving academic, post-secondary, career, and life success.

SEL involves acquiring and effectively applying knowledge, attitudes, and skills to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, make responsible and caring decisions, and demonstrate behaviors that contribute to academic success.

Decades of research confirm that SEL benefits all student groups, boosts academics, improves mental health and wellness, supports workforce development, and reinforces character education.

From March 7-11, the District will “SELebrate” these benefits, and share with the community why SEL is important. Each day will have a different focus:

• Monday, March 7: Self-Awareness and Self-Management

• Tuesday, March 8: Social Awareness

• Wednesday, March 9: Relationship Skills

• Thursday, March 10: Responsible Decision-Making

• Friday, March 11: National SEL Day

Helping children develop social and emotional skills takes an environment of trust, respect, and support. By modeling these skills and consistently nurturing positive behaviors, the District can create a climate where everyone thrives.
