Wear Green on May 23

As part of Mental Health Awareness and Trauma-Informed Care Month, the School District of Palm Beach County is encouraging its employees and the community to wear green on Thursday, May 23.* The purpose of the campaign is to show support and foster safe spaces to talk openly about behavioral health and trauma.

According to Healthier Delray Beach, one in four adults and one in five youth (ages 13 to 18), experience serious mental health concerns, and 26 percent of children experience a traumatic event before the age of four.

Of those, 60 percent of adults and 50 percent of youth do not receive the necessary treatment due to limited or no knowledge of their mental health needs, barriers to care, or fear and shame. Local organizations are working to change these statistics by promoting awareness about behavioral health and encouraging communities to offer trauma-informed care.

Thanks to the voter-approved referendum, more than $50 million is being dedicated to enhancing mental health programs within the District. This includes providing mental health/behavior coaches in all District schools and hiring or contracting additional school psychologists, counselors, and mental health clinicians.
