The Haitian Heritage Month Essay Contest for high school students began in 2004 as part of the celebration of Haitian Heritage Month in the School District. The goal of the contest is to motivate students to practice their critical thinking and writing skills.

Additionally, through their participation in the contest, the hope is to increase the self-esteem of Haitian students by promoting their history and culture and encouraging them to conduct historical research about their country, their people, and their contributions to the history of the world.
