Staff members in the School District of Palm Beach County dedicate their lives to serving the educational and emotional needs of students, but a new tool available to all District employees will encourage everyone to look inward to understand their own thoughts and feelings to combat anxiety, stress, and sleep issues.

Headspace is teaming up with the District to offer employees free guided meditation sessions, mindfulness, and social and emotional learning support for one year.

“Meditation isn’t about becoming a different person, a new person, or even a better person. It’s about training in awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective,” according to Headspace. “You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings. You’re learning about them without judgment. And eventually, you may start to better understand them as well.”

The Headspace app offers guided meditation sessions tailored to a variety of experience levels and issues, including stress, sleep, focus, and anxiety. The sessions range in length and can be done on the employee’s own terms to help establish a daily meditation practice.

Headspace’s website says one month of use lowers stress by 32 percent and increases focus by 14 percent.

The launch of this free service comes during Teacher Appreciation Week and Mental Health Awareness Month, but employees will be able to use it through summer break and during the 2019-2020 school year.
