The Real MVPs of Financial Aid

This School’s Students are the Real MVPs of Financial Aid

Suncoast Community High School is a Florida FAFSA Challenge MVP school for the 2019–2020 school year. As of April 24, 2020, the school had one of the highest student completion rates of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in the state.

The Challenge is part of College Ready Florida, a collection of statewide initiatives coordinated by the Florida College Access Network (FCAN) to help students traditionally underrepresented in higher education continue their education after high school.

The goal of the Challenge is to increase the proportion of Florida high school seniors who complete the FAFSA, which helps students qualify for financial aid to pay for college.

The Challenge began in 2014 to encourage all Florida schools and districts to increase FAFSA completion by 5% over the previous year. This was fueled by the reality that many Florida students who could qualify for financial aid do not receive it because they do not complete the FAFSA.

As an example, in the 2018–2019 school year, Florida ranked third in the nation for the proportion of students who qualified for a Pell grant, but only 30th for the proportion of students who completed the FAFSA.

To encourage increased FAFSA completion, FCAN supports a variety of initiatives at no charge to participating schools through training sessions, toolkits, guides, technical assistance, data, and marketing collateral. More than 400 schools in Florida now participate in at least one of the College Ready Florida initiatives.
