The essay contest first began in 2004 as part of the District’s celebration of May as Haitian Heritage Month. The goal of the contest is to encourage students to apply their critical thinking and writing skills in exploring important issues.

The contest also aims to increase the self-esteem of Haitian students by promoting their history and culture, encouraging them to conduct historical research about Haiti and its people, and their contributions to the history of the world.
