During the week of November 11–15, the School District of Palm Beach County will join with districts throughout the country in celebrating National School Psychology Awareness Week, highlighting the important work school psychologists do each day to help students thrive.

This year’s theme is “Find Your Focus!” According to the National Association of School Psychologists, finding your focus can have a variety of meanings such as paying attention, being able to see an idea more clearly, identifying an area of interest, or being persistent or determined in one’s effort.

Focusing can help us set goals, identify action steps, communicate a need, and engage in discussions to help create the connections necessary for students to develop critical academic and social-emotional skills.

School psychologists help students, families, educators, and members of the community understand and resolve both long-term chronic problems and short-term issues. In alignment with this year’s theme, School Psychologists will be focusing on helping to improve school climate, advocating for systems-level change, and/or enhancing specific areas of their practice.

They understand how these issues affect the learning, behavior, social emotional well-being, and school engagement of students, teachers, and parents alike. That’s why this week is a great time to learn more about school psychology and acknowledge all of the hardworking school psychologists in the District.
