Milagros Martinez, author of Milagro's Designs: Modern Sewing, recently visited John I. Leonard High School to speak with students in the school’s Fashion Design program. Martinez first discovered her love of fashion at the age of nine, learning the intricacies of design from a seamstress in her neighborhood.

The Cuban-born Martinez dreamed of having a career in fashion since she was a young girl, and her journey to becoming a published author and designer was filled with ups and downs. She raised a child with health issues, and it was her sewing ability that allowed her to work from home and be her own boss in order to support her family.

She shared that message of perseverance with the students during her visit, as well as the joy she gets from creating clothing that puts a smile on people’s faces.

“It was very exciting seeing so many kids interested in fashion,” Martinez said. “It is a passion I have and something I enjoy when I see someone putting on a piece that I created.”

John I. Leonard’s Fashion Design program provides students with the skills necessary for careers in fashion design, fashion merchandising, costume design, and entrepreneurship. The hands-on curriculum focuses on design skills and a broad array of garment construction techniques.

“Our school had the pleasure of having Ms. Martinez as a guest speaker, and it is so important to bring the classroom alive through these kinds of events,” said Daisy Lord, the school’s Choice Coordinator. “This helps inspire students to envision themselves pursuing their dreams.”

Throughout her career, Martinez has won various professional awards, and watched her children grow into successful adults. By taking the time to share her story with up-and-coming designers, she is able to influence their career trajectory and leave a lasting impression.

“I want them to hear from someone who has fulfilled their dream and know what that feels like,” Martinez said. “It’s important because this will help them build on the potential they have and inspire them to pursue their chosen career.”

The Department of Choice and Career Options is hosting their annual Showcase of Schools on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, in the Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds. The Showcase of Schools will feature more than 300 Choice and CTE Programs available throughout the School District of Palm Beach County.
