For more than two decades, Lights On Afterschool has marked the celebration of the positive effect after-school programs have on the lives of children, families, and communities. This year, on October 22, the District and its schools will honor the critical efforts of after-school staff.

After-school programs provide support in the form of homework assistance, outdoor structured activities, academic enrichment, as well as providing an outlet for the fine arts, both before and after regular scheduled school day hours.

After-school students receive at least two hours of academic enrichment per week, with a variety of additional activities such as educational games, computer-based learning, literacy, academic clubs, and tutoring.

According to The Afterschool Alliance, the organization that promotes Lights On Afterschool, “the celebration each year draws attention to the many ways after-school programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things like science, community service, robotics, and other new skills.”

The Afterschool Alliance is hosting virtual events through October 23. View schedule and sign up here.

Prime Time Palm Beach County, which is a nonprofit organization that supports out-of-school time programs and professionals, is celebrating Lights On Afterschool with a virtual light bulb challenge on social media.

“Afterschool professionals not only keep the lights on, but they bring a glow we need now more than ever,” Prime Time wrote on Twitter.

Prime Time is also profiling “afterschool superstars committed to keeping the lights on.”

Elementary after-school programs are open to students attending School District of Palm Beach County schools, including kindergartners through outgoing fifth graders. Applicants are registered on a first come, first serve basis. Students cannot register in the after-school program if they have any outstanding balances in the District.
