Middle School Students working on Medical Science Lab ProjectSince the 2013-2014 school year, L.C. Swain Middle School has offered a Medical Sciences Academy, a three-year preparatory honors program. Students in the program are exposed to a curriculum that emphasizes science, math, and language skills, preparing them to be highly competitive in the medical field. Some of the courses offered include Orientation to Health Occupations, Exploration of Health Occupations, and Medical Skills and Services.

“Middle school medical academies are a great way to introduce students to medical careers,” said program instructor Dr. Ernesto Chirolde, who holds degrees in medicine, nursing, and science. “During their three years in the academy, students study a variety of medical topics such as medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and clinical procedures. In the end, their interest in medical careers are widened, and they express interest in surgery, biotechnology, medical research, and other careers.”

Students are immersed in a hands-on, technologically advanced curriculum that includes dissection, labs, and the use of a Z-Space 3D virtual lab. Upon completion of the Academy, students may be eligible to receive preferred status when they apply to the medical sciences academy at John I. Leonard High School. Once at John I. Leonard, students can be simultaneously enrolled in the medical sciences academy and the school’s International Spanish Academy.

The School District of Palm Beach County offers Medical Science Programs at every level. Programs are offered at three elementary schools, 16 middle schools, 19 high schools, and four Adult Education Centers.
