Marcia Andrews Green-Garner AwardPalm Beach County School Board member Marcia Andrews is a finalist for the Green-Garner Award for Urban Educator of the Year, one of just five finalists nationwide. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in urban education leadership.

Andrews has represented District 6 since November 2010, after more than 40 years of experience as an educator in the School District. Her entry into the profession was fueled by her devotion to helping others, a commitment she carried with her into holding leadership roles in several education, community, social, and civic organizations.

Her decades of experience supporting students and education has received widespread praise. She is highly-respected throughout the County and State for her dedication and focus on improving the lives of the people in her board district.

“The work led by Mrs. Andrews to improve the Glades community through the reconstitution of West Technical Education Center is unprecedented,” said Dr. Charlene Ford, Principal of West Tech Education Center in Belle Glade. “In my 20+ years in education, I’ve never worked with anyone that has such a passion for her constituents.”

The award is given by the Council of the Great City Schools, and Andrews has been an active member since 2010. With her urging and support, the District’s Finance, Facilities, Human Resources, and Legislative employees are all active participants at the Council’s meetings. Additionally, Andrews has been named Chair-Elect to the Executive Board for the Council.

The Green-Garner Award is sponsored by the Council, and Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education, and media company. The award is named for Richard Green and Edward Garner. Green held posts as chancellor of New York City Public Schools and superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools, in addition to being a mentor to fellow urban superintendents across the country. Garner was a notable businessman and board president of Denver Public Schools who helped establish and fund the award.

The winner of the Green-Garner Award will receive a $10,000 college scholarship for a graduating senior in their school system and will be announced during the awards ceremony on October 26 as part of the Council’s 67th annual Fall Conference.
