STEM Programs in Palm Beach County Schools
Recognizing the critical importance of STEM education in the lives of their students, the School District of Palm Beach County is dedicated to advancing quality STEM education. A variety of STEM related opportunities for K-12 students and educators that are offered by District staff and community partners.
Booked on STEM
A collaboration between the departments of Educational Technology, Library Media Services, and K-12 STEM Curriculum from the School District of Palm Beach County. This website contains a series of mini-lessons with expanded STEM-focused lessons that were developed as a result of this collaboration. These lessons are based on authentic literature and designed for media specialist and classroom teacher use. The focus of this project is to help students learn critical thinking skills, recognize the importance of making good observations, and to foster the ability to synthesize solutions to problems. These instructional materials will prepare students for learning and developing the life skills they will need throughout school and beyond.
Elementary Science, Math & STEM Fair
The Elementary Science, Math and STEM Fair provides young learners with an opportunity to investigate the things they are curious about, design and execute their own experiments, practice how scientists and mathematicians do their work, and begin making choices about disciplines they may want to study in their future.
MacBeach Explorations is an environmental education program that immerses students into natural communities and provides students with “real-world” connections to the life science concepts that they are studying in the classroom. The goal of this initiative is to provide elementary students with quality field trip experiences to John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. While at the park, students explore the natural habitats, conduct hands-on science experiments, and collect and share data. Students then blog about their findings with other students across the district.
SECME (Science, Engineering, Communications, Mathematics, Enrichment) is a program that strives to increase the pool of students who will be prepared to enter and complete post-secondary studies in the STEM fields. This program reaches out to elementary and secondary students who are historically under-represented in the STEM fields with the long-term goal of creating a more diverse and globally competitive workforce.
Secondary Science and Engineering Fair
It all begins with an idea! Students begin their projects with a research plan. Once the plan is approved, experimentation begins. School fair competitions are held in October, and the selected winners compete in December at the regional fair. The winners of these events go on to participate in SSP-affiliated regional and state fairs from which the best win the opportunity to attend the International Science & Engineering Fair. Intel ISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talents on an international stage, where doctoral level scientists review and judge their work.
STEM Choice Programs
Families with students entering Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 have the opportunity to choose from an array of theme-based curricula offerings at the elementary, middle, and high school levels that provide innovative and rigorous academic instruction by specially trained them with a pathway to post-secondary teachers. These programs engage students and provide educations and career options.
Fun-filled, casual evenings of networking, brainstorming, and collaboration where education professionals who are interested in building STEM in Palm Beach County gather. Participants learn more about what STEM integration looks like in classrooms across the county, hear about special opportunities, and get resources that can be used in classrooms.
Field Research Ranger Program
This program was established to encourage families and elementary students to get outdoors and experience the wonders of science in Florida. The collaborative initiative between RISE organizations (Resources in Science Education) and the School District of Palm Beach County initiative incorporates benchmark specific enrichment activities promoting STEM. The goal of this program is to further educate our learning community through highly interactive learning experiences and to foster life-long learning outside the traditional classroom setting.
