Pink Shirt Day is an international bullying prevention event which originated in Canada when a boy was bullied for wearing a pink shirt on his first day at high school. Bystanders came to school the next day wearing pink. They created a ‘Sea of Pink’ to make a statement to stand up for others. In Palm Beach County, thousands of children and adults prepare for Pink Shirt Day with an annual local educational theme and event coordinated by the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County’s Turning Bullies into Buddies program and celebrate Pink Shirt Day by wearing pink on the last Wednesday in February.
The theme this year is “Gratitude is the Attitude.”
From performances and poetry readings, creating a “wax museum” highlighting important figures in Black history and celebrating Black scientists and mathematicians, students at schools throughout the School District of Palm Beach County are recognizing Black History Month and the contributions of African Americans.
Throughout February, schools will host special events and incorporate lessons on the accomplishments of African Americans. This month’s events that are open to the public.
