More than 20 students recently graduated from the Home Health Aide (HHA) program, the very first cohort of students to do so. This program started in September 2018 at the Adult Education Center and the Delray Full Service Center. These students are now able to obtain employment in the medical field at hospitals, nursing homes, and independent living facilities. They also have the ability to pursue advanced degrees in the medical field. All the students have been offered positions after completing the program.

Online Adult High School classes unburdens path to high school diplomas

Ten students attending the Adult Virtual Academy (AVA) earned their State of Florida High School diploma in the 2016-2017 school year. AVA is the online school of Adult & Community Education of the School District of Palm Beach County. However, online students still face many of the same struggles and hardships of traditional students.

Imelda Gutierrez from Belle Glade says, “I wanted to finish my education.” She found it difficult to make time to go class at a “traditional” school, and AVA lifted that burden. Now, she logs onto a computer, stays persistent, and keeps track of her hours every week from home. She first learned about the program through Glades Central Community High School and has completed the requirements to receive her high school diploma. Imelda plans to go to college to become a certified Ultrasound Tech and work in the nursing field.

Another graduate of AVA, Onaney Pulles from Cuba, says she returned to school to improve her family's life, her life, and her future. Finding the time to complete her courses while taking care of her children and helping them with their homework were hardships she faced going back to school. AVA offered her a chance to incorporate school into her own personal schedule.

Glades Central Community High School pushed her towards the online Adult High school program when they found out she only needed two credits to graduate. Having earned her high school diploma, she says, “ I want to attend Palm Beach State College and study Psychology.”

The Adult Virtual Academy offers AHS, GED® and ESOL programs. It is the fastest growing program of Adult & Community Education, averaging 450 students per term. Students study online, at their own convenience, with ongoing guidance provided by virtual instructors.

The online Adult High School program is geared towards students who are at least 16 years old, officially withdrawn from a K-12 school, and need a couple of courses to get their regular high school diploma.
Bernadette Wise, who oversees academic classes at the Adult Virtual Academy says, “The Adult Virtual Academy empowers students to obtain a life goal, while still managing their current busy life responsibilities and to be active members of their community.”

The Adult Virtual Academy also offers hundreds of online Fun & Leisure classes that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. Classes can be viewed on a computer, and in some cases, downloaded to a mobile device, to facilitate earning “on the go.” Class topics include real estate, foreign languages, cooking, fitness, photography, information technology, software, business skills and many more.

Adrian Gonzalez LaBrada arrived in the U.S. from Cuba on November 14, 2009, a date he will never forget. In Cuba, he was Principal at Escuela Primaria Marta Abreu and Professor at Universidad Pedagógica Blas Roca Calderío. He works as a custodian at SDPBC since 2010.

The team at Project Transition assisted Adrian with acclimating to his new life in the US. He learned English through Adult & Community Education ESOL classes at the Adult Ed Center and Holy Cross Academy. To help him study for his Citizenship test, the team at Project Transition recorded a CD with information about the test. Adrian listened to the CD every day in his car for months; he also studied from the manual. "I feel very happy because I made a big effort and it led to a wonderful prize," says Adrian. "I am now a U.S. citizen."
